Decorating Parisian Apartment Style.
On a recent trip to Paris we visited friends who were living in a beautiful Apartment. The building was part of a typical Parisian street scape, complete with grey stone buildings, wrought iron balconies, pots of red geraniums and a Patisserie at the end of the street. Inside, the apartment featured high ceilings, tall windows and a feeling of much history.

My observations to pass on to decorators who would like to capture some elements of French styling, Parisian Apartment Style, in their décor were several.

Large vintage style mirrors were everywhere, catching the activity and reflecting the furnishings of the room.
There were numerous clocks on display.Not all the clocks worked but they looked good.
The walls were alive with pictures and posters of Paris and its landmarks, especially the Eiffel Tower.

Much of the furniture was painted black or grey with high lights of gold. The furniture looked well used but not shabby. The term is 'shabby chic'.
Elegant chairs covered in richly coloured fabric were placed about the room. As were small tables displaying ornaments and items of personal interest.
There were beautiful chandeliers in the dining room and the sitting room.
Vintage candelabra, silk cushions, porcelain figurines and fresh flowers caught my eye.
The floors were painted boards with large rugs.
The window coverings included a mixture of materials. The main bedroom reflected the intimacy of the room with drapes that included valances, braiding, silk cording and tassels.
The colour palette was white with coloured feature walls in some of the rooms such as the study, accentuating a more personal space.

Black and gold were used as accent colours for pictures on the wall and for the accessories in the room.

How to get this Parisian Apartment decorating look?
This style of decorating would be rewarding but may challenge the budget.

Tip 1 Clean the wall and test with interiorinstyle's 'Q'.

Usually a dust over is enough but if using water, make sure the surface is dry before proceeding.
Every kit has a 'Q' for Quality. It allows you to test your wall surface.
interiorinstyle recommends you leave the 'Q' test sticker for 48hours.
Test that the 'Q' sticks and removes from your surface (plasterboard wall, window or other similar surface).

Tip 2 Position the wall sticker sheet on the wall.

Using masking tape, position the wall sticker sheet on the wall to get your desired layout.
Mark the sheet's position on the wall with pencil that can be rubbed off.

Tip 3 Prepare the wall decal so it will easily stick to the wall.

Take down the sheet and lay it on a clean flat surface such as a table.
Lay the sheet on the table with the the top paper layer—the overlay— face up.
Scour the decal with the edge of a plastic card.
Vigorously rub the card over the overlay. Pay special attention to the corners, edges and the intricate parts of the design.

This action binds the sticker to the overlay and makes handling of such a large wall sticker easy.

Tip 4 Separate the backing sheet from the overlay

While laid out on the clean flat surface, carefully separate the overlay sheet from the backing sheet.
Make sure the Eiffel Tower wall sticker remains attached to the overlay.
Hold it so the overlay does not double back on itself.
Once the two sheets have separated, carefully carry the sheet back to the wall.

Tip 5 Fix the wall sticker to the wall.

Standing in front of the wall, locate the pencil marks.
Using the pencil marks as a guide, stick the decal to the wall.
When in position, rub over the overlay with your hand to smooth down the sheet.
Rub the plastic card over the sheet.
This action helps bond the sticker to the wall.

Tip 6 Remove the overlay, leaving the sticker on the wall.

Carefully pull back the overlay using the plastic card as a tool for holding the sticker in place as it separates from the overlay.
Start at the top and pull the overlay downwards.
Cut off excess overlay as you go.
Work your way downwards so that all that remains is the stunning Eiffel Tower wall sticker attached to the wall.

Tip 7 Finishing off.

Carefully rub over the wall decal with a soft cloth, smoothing out any bubbles or creases.
In the next few days, rub your hand over the Eiffel Tower to make sure all the edges have bonded.
This is important because it is such a large sticker.

Tip 8 How to achieve an overall interior decorator look.

Add accessories to your room decoration that complements the Eiffel Tower by theme or colour.
Create your own 'decorating style you are pleased to come home to'.

Tip 9 Wall decals are easy to remove when the time comes for an update.

Just use tweezers or your fingernails to lift up a corner of the decal and gently pull the wall sticker away from the wall.

Decorating Rooms in the French Farmhouse Style. Creating a French Farmhouse Look.
On a recent trip to France, I had the pleasure of spending a memorable week in Brittany, staying with friends in a beautifully renovated farmhouse. The farmhouse was a striking building made of local stone with an imposing thatched and slate roof, set in large grounds and surrounded by working farms. Being woken by the sound of tractors confirmed its rural location.

My observations to pass on to decorators who would like to capture some elements of French Country Style in their décor were several.

• The French Farmhouse style of decoration evokes an atmosphere of warmth with a touch of elegance.
• The colour palette was almost stark. The walls were white, the ground floors grey polished cement and tiles. The upper floor were mixture of honey and dark coloured polished boards.
• It was the dressing up of the walls and the seamless mixture of old scrubbed furniture mixed with modern pieces that brought it all together.
• The beautiful and very French chandelier over the dining room table was a focus of elegance and charm. Sitting down to dine in this room was very special .

How did it all come together?
The natural stonework, the exposed beams, the colour palette, the mixture of new and old furniture, and the gold coloured wall decoration created a feeling of relaxed, sophisticated living.
The white walls and the white bed covers were crisp and fresh while the honey coloured doors and pieces of scrubbed furniture gave the impression of warmth. Because the house was rented, there were minimal pieces of interest on display. However the wall dressings used a clever combination of gold metal plates and gold coloured ornate mirrors to reflect the furniture and activity in the room.

Views from the windows of the ancient hydrangeas growing in the garden and the rolling countryside added an elegant touch. This French Farmhouse style of

decoration was a great back-drop for a fantastic week spent with friends enjoying good company, French food and French wine.

Sadly interiorinstyle will not be exhibiting at the Life Instyle trade show this year. The interiorinstyle team is just too busy! Thanks to all our retail and wholesale clients. 2009 was such a big year and 2010 promises to be even bigger.

2009 saw the launch of the interiorinstyle website at interiorinstyle which has exceeded all expectations. (check out the look book section for the current ranges, as the creative team have cleverly put each range into an online catalogue)

Activities to keep the interiorinstyle team busy included:
• the establishment of interiorinstyle’s own factory,
